E-Bike Tour Destination – Australia’s Rail Trails

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on May 26, 2018 2:42:07 PM

In case you hadn't noticed global cycle tourism, and in particular e-bike tourism  is on the rise.  Australia has been playing catch up, but the overwhelming  social, economic, and health benefits associated with redeveloping abandoned railway infrastructure have led to significant upgrades in recent years.

With new investment and continued support from local communities,  the resultant rail trails, shared-use paths recycled from abandoned railway corridors used for cycling, walking and horse riding, are slowly being opened up to the public  across the country.

Enjoy Everything Australia has to Offer on an E-Bike

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on May 24, 2018 12:21:47 PM

It is, unfortunately, a symptom of the relative immaturity of the majority of the cycle touring community in Australia - the belief that the best cycle touring adventures can only be enjoyed overseas.

Sure, France is a dream destination for a host of reasons; Germany and The Netherlands have amazing cycling infrastructure and the west coast of Ireland should be on every cycle tourist’s bucket list, but as the E-Bike Cycle Tourists have discovered much to their delight over the past few weeks there is also much to like about cycle touring in Australia.

Discovering Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney by Electric Bike

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on May 3, 2018 10:03:37 AM

Melbourne, for the uninitiated visitor, is an e-biker’s delight.  With a cycling culture as developed as the cities’ world class network of cycle paths it is a destination that should be on the bucket list of all keen cyclists – of both the e-bike and non-ebike persuasion.

After exploring – and enjoying - a selection of Victoria’s rail trails and the e-mountain biking on offer at the ski fields of Mt Buller, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek, my wife, Rachel, and I headed back to Melbourne with one intention – to ride our AVE Adventure bikes on as many cycle trails as possible in the precious few days we had available.

Prior to arriving in Melbourne there was no way, we believed, that we could have as much fun cycling in a city as big as Melbourne as we did in country Victoria.

But let me tell you here and now that we were wrong, very wrong.

3-Peaks AVE Electric Bike Challenge and the Rail Trails of Victoria

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Apr 11, 2018 6:22:35 PM

Well, what a week of e-biking, exploring and discovery it has been!

With our ongoing search for a suitable Brisbane to Melbourne e-bike cycle touring route still a work in progress, the focus of the past week has been on doing as much riding on the E-Bike Cycle Tourists’ AVE SH11 and TH11 Adventure electric bikes as possible.

As such every opportunity was taken at stops between Sydney and Melbourne – where my previous blog was filed – to go cycle touring before eventually collecting Mrs E-Bike Cycle Tourist from Melbourne Airport for the mad dash to the rail trails and ski fields of eastern and central Victoria.

And to say that we are happy about finally being on the road again on our AVE electric bikes is without a shadow of a doubt an understatement of monumental proportions. Suffice to say it is hard to wipe the e-bike smiles off our faces!

So far we have conquered the East Gippsland Rail Trail, the Great Southern Rail Trail, the Yarra Trail in Melbourne and are currently camped at Bonnie Doon on the Great Victorian Rail Trail where we plan to ride approximately 130kms over the next couple of days.

E-Bike Cycle Touring from Brisbane to Melbourne

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Mar 29, 2018 10:38:31 AM

It was without a shadow of doubt one of the most frequently asked questions the E-Bike Cycle Tourists fielded during our 27,800km world record-breaking e-bike adventure.

“Why did you decide to set a new world ebike long distance record in mainland Europe and the UK and not your home country of Australia?”

Aside from the fact that we are unabashed Europhiles – we simply can’t get enough of the culture, scenery and history that Europe, the UK and Ireland offers – the truth of the matter is that when we were planning our trip we truly didn’t believe it was safe enough to cycle anything up to 30,000kms on Australian roads.

Given the well recorded antipathy Australian drivers show to cyclists we couldn’t for the life of us see how we could safely negotiate the big distances required to set a world record – so Europe it was.

As a result, given all of the above, even I am having difficulty believing what I have been doing over the past three days - scouting a suitable route for a planned Brisbane to Melbourne e-bike tour on our AVE Adventure SH11 and TH11 electric bikes at some stage in the near future.

The e-Bike Cycle Tourists head for Victorian High Country

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Mar 21, 2018 12:12:47 PM

Eighteen months after returning to Australia with a new world record of 27,800kms firmly in our keeping for the longest continuous e-bike journey ever completed, it’s finally time to hit the road again.

And make no mistake; the E-Bike Cycle Tourists couldn’t be happier!

Unfortunately the journey this time around will take considerable less time than the 16 months our record-breaking jaunt around mainland Europe and the UK took and there is also absolutely no chance this time around of us bettering our own world record.

But that in no way dilutes the excitement we are feeling in the lead-up to heading off again on our AVE Adventure E-Bikes ... a good analogy is that we are two e-bike cycle touring addicts who are absolutely craving our next, imminent, touring hit.

So what is the plan?

The Start of an AVE e-Bike Love Affair

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Feb 6, 2018 1:34:40 PM

It’s not a declaration I would normally make in such a public way, but sometimes a man just has to say it as it is, so here goes … I have fallen in love.

But before you jump to all the wrong conclusions about the object of my desire don’t worry, my gorgeous wife, Rachel, doesn’t mind one little bit because, like me, she is just as smitten about her own new love.

So what the hell is going on, you are entitled to ask?

E-Bike Cycling Holidays … the New Adventure Experience for Over 40s

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Nov 25, 2017 1:53:48 PM

Traditionally adventure holidays have been the exclusive domain of adrenalin junkies keen to get out of their comfort zone while cycling, climbing, sailing or canoeing at some of the most beautiful places in the world.

In fact over the years an entire industry has emerged that has very successfully catered to testosterone charged individuals in the 20 to 40 age group.

But in the rush to provide ever bigger thrills and spills for their young customers, the vast majority of tour operators forgot one very important group of potential customers - cashed up over 40s keen to experience an active adventure holiday of their own.

Not content to watch the scenery go by while on holiday from the seat of a car, bus or train - as their parents did - today’s new breed of 40-plus holiday makers want a slice of the action on offer, on, admittedly, a somewhat reduced adrenalin scale.
