What Kilometre Range Can You Expect From Your E-Bike?

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Dec 15, 2017 5:03:00 AM

It is a question everyone who is contemplating the purchase of an e-bike asks, “what range can I expect”.

Unfortunately the true answer is that there is no easy answer … essentially the comeback reply is, “how long is a piece of string?” such are the complexities of the answer.

But never one to shirk a tough situation and with the experience of 27,800 kilometres of pedalling to a world e-bike long distance record on a Bosch-powered e-bike under my belt, I guess I am as well qualified as anyone to give a definitive answer, sort of.

The first thing to realise when searching for an answer to the “how far” question is that there is a long list of variables to be included into the equation.

E-Bike Technology – Everything That is Old is New Again

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Dec 8, 2017 4:02:00 AM

While the common belief amongst the vast majority of e-bike devotees is that they are riding the fruits of a new and innovative 21st Century industry, nothing could be further from the truth.

Sure, the entire e-mobility transportation industry has gone

ahead in leaps and bounds over the past 10 or so years in line with huge advances in lithium ion battery technology, but the concept of electric bicycles is far from new.

In fact, around the same time German inventor Karl Benz built what is now widely accepted to have been the world’s first automobile in 1885/86, a raft of inventors had already – or were well on their way -  to conceiving, designing and building the first electric bicycles.

Is E-Bike Riding Cheating?

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Nov 29, 2017 12:12:36 PM

In the English language arguably one of the ultimate of accusations is to be labelled a ‘cheat’.

And rightly so! After all, as the Oxford Dictionary so very clearly states, “to cheat at something is to act in a dishonest way in order to gain an advantage”.

Cheat in a game, in a competition, during an exam or, even, in marriage, and you risk either being charged with an offence, ordered to make amends or, at the least, being publicly and privately ostracised.

Essentially to be outed as a cheat is tantamount to being declared a public pariah.

So why is it then that the word ‘cheat’ is so widely levelled at anyone who dares to ride an e-bike?

No, e-bike enthusiasts are not serial bigamists, are not committing any offence in the eye of the law – as long as they adhere to all road rules - and in the true sense of the word are doing absolutely nothing dishonest.

E-Bike Cycling Holidays … the New Adventure Experience for Over 40s

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Nov 25, 2017 1:53:48 PM

Traditionally adventure holidays have been the exclusive domain of adrenalin junkies keen to get out of their comfort zone while cycling, climbing, sailing or canoeing at some of the most beautiful places in the world.

In fact over the years an entire industry has emerged that has very successfully catered to testosterone charged individuals in the 20 to 40 age group.

But in the rush to provide ever bigger thrills and spills for their young customers, the vast majority of tour operators forgot one very important group of potential customers - cashed up over 40s keen to experience an active adventure holiday of their own.

Not content to watch the scenery go by while on holiday from the seat of a car, bus or train - as their parents did - today’s new breed of 40-plus holiday makers want a slice of the action on offer, on, admittedly, a somewhat reduced adrenalin scale.

How to Prepare for a Successful e-Bike tour

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Nov 2, 2017 5:51:07 PM

After long and careful deliberation you recently plunged head-first into the electric bike world with the purchase of a brand new  AVE Adventure e-bike (or hopefully it's still on your short list)

And how good is it! Not only do you now actually look forward to your daily commute to work, but it didn’t take you long to realise that your old ‘as flat as possible’ route was just plain boring, with a new route incorporating previously avoided-at-all-cost hills now the preferred option.

New TH11 Adventure e-Bike First Ride Impressions

Posted by e-bike World Record Holder Gary Corbett on Oct 27, 2017 4:14:53 PM

Ask any first-time e-bike rider what they thought of the experience and the result is inevitably a tirade of adjectives.

Amazing, incredible, extraordinary, magnificent, wonderful, marvellous, remarkable, phenomenal … the list of adjectives used goes on and on such is the positivity of the experience.

And, as I discovered all too graphically recently after test riding two AVE e-bikes for the first time, you don’t have to be a first timer on an e-bike to experience what is widely recognised within the ebike industry as the “e-bike smile”.
